Good fear, bad fear

Good fear, bad fear

How to free yourself from limiting fears.
Fears and anxiety

Good fear vs. bad fear

Fears are unpleasant obstacles on the way to a fulfilling life. This article is about what fears and anxiety good for and how to let go of limiting fears.

Good fear, bad fear

There are some obstacles on the journey to a fulfilling life to master, again and again, and again. Many of these obstacles have to do with fear.

Personal development

Fears have a huge impact on our lives. Fear reduces the joy of exploration, play, imitation, and creativity, causes stress, alters the personality. And I am writing here about the fears that many of us know.

Everyday fears and other anxieties

Some things in life are uncertain. We win something, we lose something. Not everything in life evolves as planned, and sometimes it gets harder. That’s when worries can take on serious forms.

Many people are afraid of something. Many things can frighten us humans. Some fear is justified, others unjustified or at least exaggerated;

  • the fear of being judged by other people
  • the fear of being alone, of exam situations, speaking in front of an audience
  • the pressure to perform

Fear rarely makes it better.

Fear makes life more difficult. For example, our decision-making.

Decisions also have consequences, and this can be a burden, can cause anxiety. Fear stands in the way of making clever decisions. Paralyzed by fear, the scope for creativity is not explored and used. Important conversations are avoided out of fear, or they are painful.

Many relationships are only maintained out of fear of being alone. Many stay in the job because they worry about not finding a more suitable one and finally dare to approach to their calling. A lot of challenges and therefore chances remain unexploited because of fear.

Often the fears are unjustified or at least disproportionate, and yet they slow us down, distract us, or even paralyze us. Many of them have the characteristics of demons, which on closer inspection turn out to be projections. And even if they turn out to be substantiated, it is usually better to align and design resources accordingly than to ignore them.

In the case of phobias, it becomes very obvious; avoidance makes the fear grow. There and elsewhere, avoiding unpleasant issues does not solve them, the problem just gets bigger.

How about the purpose of fear?

What is fear good for?

1. Fear is supposed to protect us

Hardly any human emotion has such a bad reputation as fear. People are even afraid of fear.

Fear has a vital function, it is an alarm reaction that should protect us when there is a threat. It is designed to prompt us to flee, to fight, or to exercise extreme caution.

The fear reactions are partly based on innate reflexes and some are learned. Both acute fear and worries about future events that might threaten our existence can be helpful. In the right dosage, it stimulates us to take action. But when fear prevails, it blocks us until we are paralyzed.

2. Anxiety promotes peak performance

Fear can unleash incredible powers. For a short time, the body is ready to perform at its best when anxious. Usually, this lasts as long as the dangerous situation lasts. However, increased physical abilities are not as helpful in many situations today as they were in our ancestor’s situation. Unfortunately, our cognitive abilities largely take a break in the meantime.

3. Physical reactions

When we are anxious, we notice above all the accompanying symptoms; trembling, wet hands, palpitations, rapid breathing up to shortness of breath, dry mouth, altered facial expressions, paleness or blushing, sweating, trembling, weakness, dizziness, diarrhea, urge to urinate and nausea as well as altered, limited perception up to a blackout.

Fear is a primitive system. This fear reaction is supposed to protect us from danger, and the physical reactions that accompany it are natural. This is also the case when fear and anxiety are learned reactions to an unpleasant experience. Then the strong aversion to possible risks should protect against having that negative experiences again. However, too much fear restricts the ability to act appropriately.

Where does fear come from?

The fear response starts in a region of the brain called the amygdala. But how and why did the human species developed that mechanism?

In human history, our species once was a source of food, our ancestors were in danger of being eaten. You and me, we are descended from those who were more careful. The ancestors who were not afraid did not reproduce so often because they were eaten in those times. This has probably left patterns during evolution. Parts of our brains have not yet adjusted to the changing world.

In our somewhat more civilized world, existential threats are usually of a different nature.

Nowadays, only a few people are consumed by hungry wild animals. But our brain still evaluates situations according to old criteria and triggers primal physical reactions. Today this no longer happens in the wild, but for example in meeting rooms and in front of an audience. It is still frightening to leave the supposedly safe center of the herd. The so often praised individuality usually aims at maintaining the security of belonging to a group. On the periphery and outside the herd we feel threatened.

A stage is not a battleground, but if the reptilian brain believes that the audience might be dangerous, you may experience severe stage fright.

Here, and in many other situations, fear no longer helps us directly to save our lives. In the best case, fear leads to an activation, like a cup of espresso. If the fear increases to a restrictive blockage or even takes on pathological forms, then it is harmful.

We get used to some fears through repetition and to others we do not. Fears are not pleasant, apart from the thrill of a horror story, a roller coaster ride, or extreme sports.

Overcome fears

To overcome limiting fears is worthwhile even with mild forms. Fears haunt many people into their sleep and lead to nightmares, which in turn leave traces. Here, as in other areas, unreasonable fears unnecessarily reduce the quality of life. Such ballast works under the surface, it influences perception, thinking, and acting and should be discarded.

Get help with fears and anxieties

Fear and anxieties have many forms, manifestations, effects. Each form requires different steps. While stage fright, for example, can still be handled and solved by yourself or in coaching, real public speaking anxiety or glossophobia requires competent psychotherapy. Public speaking anxiety is considered a social anxiety disorder.

Given an appropriately experienced therapist, anxiety disorders can also be treated very well, improvement, and finally resolving them will be achieved soon. However, some fears do not require psychotherapy because they are not considered pathological. These are the anxieties that are not found in the ICD-10. ICD-10 is the abbreviation for the 10th version of the International Classification of Diseases. Whether anxieties are pathological, is not always so clear. Good coaches know when to recommend an expert. By the way, for 20 years I have been helping people affected by anxiety disorders as a therapist with permission to practice psychotherapy two days a week. Yes, fear has many forms.

“Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.”, said John Wayne. So, face your demons, and you will support your personal development. Ask for support.

The strength of character and how to cultivate it. 20 factors

The strength of character and how to cultivate it. 20 factors

Stand up for your own personality. This is how you foster strength of character. That's part of it...
Hints for strength of character

What is part of the strength of character?

Do you stand up for yourself and your concerns, are you true to your values even when there is a headwind? This article is about 20 elements of character strength and how to cultivate them.

Character and strength of character

The character describes a person, shows how someone actually is. The character influences significantly how a person is perceived by others.

If a person is considered to have the strength of character, this is meant admiringly. It is about the number of positive character traits, especially the moral attitude.

Those who do not disappear uniformly in the masses attract attention and may encounter resistance. Some people are frightened by this. What about you?

Do you stand up for yourself and your concerns, are you committed to your values, even when there is resistance? Those who cultivate strength of character are more successful and live a more fulfilling, self-determined life.

What are the building blocks of character strength, and how can we cultivate it?

20 factors: What is part of the strength of character?

Here are 20 factors that contribute to the strength of character.

1. Curiosity

Healthy curiosity, in the sense of being interested, is a daily motivator that keeps us active and therefore more agile. The desire for knowledge is physically and mentally demanding, makes us more sociable and happier. Without curiosity as a drive, there is no learning, no wisdom.

2. An own opinion

Not all of us allow ourselves our own opinion, even fewer people are prepared to stand for their own opinion with self-confidence. Insecure people tend to assimilate in order not to attract negative attention. The fear of rejection and conflicts slows down or paralyzes some people, they are hiding themselves and their opinions.

3. Courage

People of weak character are fickle, orienting themselves to the least resistance. They give way at the slightest pressure and prefer to bend rather than bite.

If necessary, personalities with strong character dare to take a bold standpoint for something. They are also not afraid to lead the way, to venture out of the anonymous mass and the comfort zone.

4. Knowing the own strengths

It helps us to be aware of our strengths in a healthy way. Those who know their strengths can cultivate them and use them more effectively.

5. Knowing the own weaknesses

Knowing your weaknesses enables you to make better decisions. The willingness to dedicate oneself to personal development and, if necessary, to make peace with the fact that something cannot be turned into a strength despite all the effort involved, helps.

6. Loyalty

Loyalty requires personality. Loyalty means faithfulness and reliability. It is expressed towards spouses, friends, family, employers, etc.
Loyalty may also require you to put your interests aside for the benefit of others.

People of strong character know their values and priorities and pay attention to ethical behavior. They are also prepared to tread uncomfortable paths.

7. Honesty

Honesty and sincerity are important virtues. With honesty, we combine reliability, commitment, and openness. To be truthful about what is said, even when it is uncomfortable, requires strength of character.

8. Willingness to take responsibility

The willingness to take responsibility also includes admitting mistakes. People with strong minds take full responsibility for their actions and learn from the feedback instead of trying to use excuses. This sometimes includes the willingness and ability to apologize when it is time to do so.

9. Patience

Constructive patience is a powerful quality of a strong personality. This includes the willingness to remain true to oneself despite short-term rewards and temptations. Only this way, it is to master greater challenges.

10. To know our priorities and values

People of strong character know their priorities and remain true to themselves and their values. I know from most people of strong character that they deal with philosophical issues. They wouldn’t call it that personally, but they are dedicated to higher goals and visions. This has a very strengthening effect on the personality.

11. Willingness to stand up for other people

The willingness to stand up for other people, even if it involves personal disadvantages, requires strength. Promises can be made, but doing it is not so common.

12. Self-reflection

Self-reflection paves the way for personal development where other people obstruct themselves. Self-reflection fosters learning and good decisions. Those who know themselves well are much harder to manipulate and live their own lives. This frees and activates potential.

13. Be at peace with oneself

Bruises, unprocessed traumas, and limiting beliefs make us more vulnerable to manipulation. Those who are occupied with themselves unnecessarily are distracted. Being mentally tidy promotes focus, more resources are available for important tasks.

Being at peace with oneself makes life easier; thinking and acting are congruent. Actions arise from their own decisions, which in turn are based on their values. Decisions are not externally controlled or based on deficits.

14. Not having to prove anything

Having nothing to prove is so liberating. Where some dazzlers loudly offer more illusion than reality, the personalities of strong characters do not have to prove anything. Another reason why people of strong character can be more authentic and relaxed.

15. Focus

Those who are engaged everywhere hardly get anywhere and sooner or later become tired. Some tasks deserve to be given the appropriate attention. This requires priorities and focus.

16. Being present

Being in the present sounds easier than it is sometimes. Some people prefer to reminisce about the highlights of the past. Others dream of a distant paradise-like future instead of working on it. There is not much to recognize of attentive contact with other people.

17. Benevolence

Strong people can wish other people good luck and treat them well. Strong personalities are not afraid of other people achieving something.

Weak ones are often afraid that other people’s successes will set them back themselves. This is particularly evident with narcissists.

18. Keep pushing

Setbacks or even traumatic experiences can be painful. They can leave behind serious injuries and break people. However, they can also promote immense personal growth.

Strong people are resilient and take setbacks as feedback. They learn from it and start again. Each experience is a chance to get closer to their goal.

19. Indulgence

To stand firm for oneself and one’s convictions are compatible with considering other points of view, exchanging views respectfully, complementing one another, learning. People of strong character are self-confident and this allows benevolence towards other people, while insecure people try to protect themselves and their position through ignorance. People make mistakes, and it is good to forgive oneself and others for that.

20. Creating instead of being a victim

It requires strength of character to continue upright even in strong headwinds. People who are focused on the possibilities remain more constructive than those who consider themselves victims of the circumstances.

How can character strength be cultivated?

The mentioned character traits provide the direction. In coaching, I take a closer look at the status and goals of my clients. This is often very personal when personal development is meant seriously. Then we proceed step by step, mentally and concretely. The strength of character can be cultivated in many ways. The important thing is to live character strength.

Opinion making needs reliable information

Opinion making needs reliable information

Information as a foundation for opinion-forming

Instead of blindly adopting opinions, it is worth investing in your own opinions. But where does the information come from?

Opportunities to form your own opinion

Long live the freedom of speech, especially if it is practiced respectfully. Different viewpoints can be very enriching. Diversity can help us to form our own opinions. Who has a monopoly on wisdom?

When analyzing information, however, it is also worth taking a more critical look at the origin. It only takes a moment and can be very enlightening. Far too often I read about news that comes from well-known propaganda sources. This is another reason why it is worthwhile to allow a few thoughts about the specific interests. Instead of blindly adopting opinions, it is worth investing in your own opinions.

Let us think for ourselves!

Self-marketing: How about your focus?

Self-marketing: How about your focus?

Crystallize and focus your message
Focus - Coaching & Training in Berlin

Focus

Self-marketing needs focus. You may have many strengths and talents. Don’t be tempted to focus on more than one or two, or you will dilute your message. Focus on your core message so that you are known for something that counts!

You can do anything, but not everything.

Focus on your core message

What do you tell your audience about yourself? You may have many strengths and talents. Don’t be tempted to focus on more than one or two at the same time, or you will dilute your message.

This is where many people fail in their market. They have a message that is all over the board and therefore their message is confusing. Nobody understands who they are or what they do.

When you focus your message, you set yourself up to be known for something. You have to focus on your core message and eliminate everything else. You need to be very clear about your message. You need to be as specific as you possibly can be.

Furthermore, you need to be willing to sacrifice everything else to focus your message. This way you will become known for that. When you are known for something specific, you become the expert in that field. As a result, you will more easily position yourself as the expert. When you can do that consistently, you’re going to gain much more loyal clients. Everybody trusts an expert more than a generalist.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a doctor, lawyer, accountant, auto mechanic, business owner, or consultant. Being seen as an expert in your niche will help your business and your career.

Positioning yourself as an expert is not an overnight proposition. It is a long-term challenge. You’re going to be investing in marketing long-term regardless. Why not do it the right way? Focus on your core message, be known for something that counts, be clear, be specific.

Concentrate: You can’t be everyone to all people. You have to give up to go up. In marketing, less is more. You have to know your target market, your ideal client. You have to understand who and how your clients are. You have to make sure that your position is right, and then you have to focus on your message. You have to repeat your core message over and over again through a variety of media, through a variety of methods. Finally, your clients think about you, when they need an expert in your field.

Focus on your core message so that you are known for something that counts!

Speech is power: Make a positive impact!

Speech Is Power: Make A Positive Impact!

How to present yourself and your offer more successfully

Speech Is Power: Make A Positive Impact!

Speech is power

Make an impact! Speech is power. And with that great power comes a great responsibility. I train and prepare your for your speeches and presentations.

Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Speech is power!

Yes, and power has a close relationship to responsibility. The responsibility is how to use this power and also the responsibility to use it when you have to. Knowing that something needs to be improved means to stand up for it and therefore to use the power of speech.

How about responsibilities?

Freedom may sound good, but the relationship to it is ambivalent. Most people do not want freedom because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility. Many really honest and respectful people let those more intrusive people persuade the masses. Even though they know better, they hold back with their opinion and their offers. It is not only important for them to speak up but for all. This leads to many disadvantages because we never hear the thoughts of those who don’t speak up. This is sad and it is also irresponsible. With the words of Moliere: “It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do.”

Speech is power!

I have a dream

Not every speech wants to change the world and not any that wants to change it will deliver a tangible contribution. But sometimes it would be nice to help shape things, right? It is good to know how to make a positive impact when it is time to stand up. Speech is power!

Be prepared

In case you believe everything around you is like you want it to be and it will consist without any support, you may be in a luxurious situation. Enjoy it!

Not everywhere everything is fair and life is paradise. In case you want to make the world a better place, be prepared to stand up. Train your most impactful tool; your power of speech.

Respect and empathy

Some people are silent and some scream. Both extremes do not provide the necessary contribution.

I believe that every argument needs a healthy amount of respect and empathy. I guess you know how to do that because you already filter yourself when speaking with people you care about. If you said every thought that popped into your head, there is a good chance you may not have as many friends as you do now, and the same principle extends to political discussions. You have to grasp that other people may have experienced different and more difficult hardships that you may not have faced yet, or maybe never will. Jump into their perspective and explore it, speak their language. Say what you want, anywhere you want as long as you do it with empathy. Empathy is what makes us human.

Let me support you

Train your most impactful tool; your power of speech and use it with respect. You are given a choice of how you use the power of speech. With great power comes great responsibility, use it respectfully and I will support you to present yourself and your offer successfully.

Preparation of important speeches and presentations

Those who do not speak are not heard, and even those who speak up are not always successful. There are a few more steps that need to be mastered.

Do you want to convince with your message and also as a personality? Then I will help you to prepare your speeches and presentations. You determine the scope. At least, I recommend a test run with professional feedback for you and your message. Then you will know how you and your content are perceived, what you should do, and what you should leave out, where there is potential. Why do you want to get such helpful feedback so late after your real performance? Then it is too late for adjustments. Benefit from the advantage. My definition of luck: Preparation meets opportunity.

You can best estimate for yourself where the effort is worthwhile concerning the expected benefit. Here you will find the fees for my support (communication, psychology, language, structure, voice, body language, storytelling, rhetorical means, media such as PowerPoint and Co., etc.)

You are not in Berlin right now? Then choose meetings with me via telephone or video support. Whereby, there are quite good reasons for a trip to Berlin.

By the way, many people suffer from such intense stage fright in front of an audience, and therefore their performance lags behind their possibilities. Too bad, because with my help performance in a good condition is possible. Just in case...

You Want to Avoid Criticism?

The value of criticism

Is it really a good idea to avoid criticism at all costs? Could criticism have value?

There is no real way to avoid criticism

To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing

Aristotle

Aristotle is correct; if you try to hide away to avoid criticism, you won’t get anywhere. However, a typical attempt to avoid criticism is not to be seen and heard – flying under the radar. But even by hiding, you could still face criticism.

A fulfilled life is not about avoiding criticism. Criticism can also be a good sign. There is some evidence that if you don’t meet any critics in your way, you are probably not going in the right direction. On well-trodden paths …

You have enemies?
Good.
That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.

Winston Churchill

It’s better to have honest criticism than to give or receive false praise. At least you know where you stand!

Criticism is seldom pleasant

Better honest criticism than false praise! At least we know where we stand.

Criticism is usually bitter and hard to swallow. This also applies to constructive criticism, but it at least gets us ahead, it makes us better. Such kind of criticism – in the sense of feedback – should not only be welcome, but even encouraged.

Some criticism is also not meant as a source of joy. There are more or less friendly people who have an innate or instilled tendency to concentrate solely on sore points and decompose ideas. They can be very harsh and do not promote motivation. The reasons are different and often of a personal nature, why you don’t want to find anything good in your idea. Often there are conflicts of interest that are not openly mentioned.

And there are these insensitive people with the urge to be ruthless. Some people don’t give a damn as long as they can destroy something. You can’t please them anyway, whatever you say or do. You better not let such people slow you down.

Instead of avoiding criticism, like the devil the holy water, take it rather as what it is; an additional perspective, the point of view of another person. No more and no less!

Preparation of important conversations and negotiations

Communication can be very easy. But often it is not. Sometimes we say things and then later notice from the reaction of our conversation partners that they seem to have spoken to someone completely different. I didn't say that with the best will in the world. - Or did I say that after all?

More or less consciously, conversations are about convincing other people of something - be it a special offer, your personality, a perspective, or a necessity. If this doesn't happen fast enough and above all not exactly to the point and descriptively, the person we are talking to quickly loses interest, and we lose the hoped-for opportunity. — Conversation failed.

You can let me support you in the preparation of your conversations and negotiations (to be on the safe side: no legal advice!). Find out how you and your message are perceived (arguments, body language, language, voice, and much more). I will familiarize you with effective tools and communication strategies. Develop your psychological skills, learn to stay calm, act confidently, remain authentic, and finally convince.

Rather SMART goals than unfulfilled wishes. SMART goals make life easier.

Rather SMART Goals Than Unfulfilled Wishes. SMART Goals Make Life Easier.

Don’t confuse your dreams with goals: Wake up and be SMART
Wake Up!

Smart goals or rather big wishful thinking?

Better smart goals than unfulfilled wishes. Well defined goals for better self-management, more effective meetings, negotiations,… Life is much easier when agreements with ourselves and others are made more clearly and realistically.

Wishes or goals?

So many people have so many good intentions. Few of them are realized. Because very often goals and wishes are confused. But with pure wishful thinking, little can be achieved beyond esotericism. Yes, I liked the 80s with the New Age, and “What’s the Bleep!” was nice too. It regularly requires more than just dreaming.

Personal declarations of intent in which only one person is involved – ourselves – are already difficult enough. This explains why agreements have their pitfalls with an increasing number of people. In meetings with 10 participants, there are frequently 11 opinions on what was agreed upon.

Real goals are S.M.A.R.T.

Whether in meetings, negotiations or your planning: The prerequisite for goal-oriented action is well-chosen and defined goals. When the defined goals lack essential characteristics, this is the most common reason why the desired result is different from the intended one.

This is a pity because it is relatively easy to significantly increase the chances of success. Use the proven SMART format to formulate your goals. Each letter represents a characteristic that has a good goal.

S.M.A.R.T. goal setting: Specific

Goals need focus, dreams don’t. Dreams can be free-floating thoughts. The goals must be formulated and specifically present.

What exactly do you want to achieve? The more precise your description, the higher the chance that you will get exactly that.

Questions you can ask yourself when setting your goals are:

  • What exactly do I want to achieve?
  • How do I want to reach it?
  • Where do I want to reach it?
  • Who do I want to reach it with?
  • What are the conditions and restrictions?
  • Why exactly do I want to achieve this goal?
  • When do I want to reach it with which steps?

S.M.A.R.T. goal setting: Measurable

Measurable goals mean that you determine exactly what you will see, hear and feel when you reach your goal. You have an idea that provides orientation. It means breaking your goal down into measurable elements. You need concrete evidence.

Some goals require a long journey. Then measurable criteria help to recognize progress.

S.M.A.R.T. goal setting: Attractive

It is very important to formulate your goals positively because what you concentrate on gets attention.

Is reaching your goal relevant to you? Why do you want to achieve this goal? What is the goal behind the goal, and will this goal make it possible?

S.M.A.R.T. goal setting: Realistic

While you can dream for free, goals do not come without a price. Time, money, effort, and sweat. How and what will you pay for your goals? Is your goal even achievable?

If you do not have sufficient resources such as time, money or talent to achieve a particular goal, you are likely to fail and be unhappy.

There is nothing wrong with reaching for the stars. That doesn’t mean you can’t take something that seems impossible and make it possible by planning wisely and tackling it. If you lack certain skills, you can plan the training. If you lack certain resources, you can look for ways to get them.

S.M.A.R.T. goal setting: Timely

Goals have a finish line. Dreams never have to end. Dreams can go on forever. They don’t have to have an ending point. Goals must have a specific outcome.

Deadlines are what make most people switch to action. So install deadlines, for yourself and your team, and go after them. Keep the timeline realistic and flexible, that way you can keep morale high. Being too stringent on the timely aspect of your goal setting can have the perverse effect of making the learning path of achieving your goals and objectives into a hellish race against time – which is most likely not how you want to achieve anything. Too much pressure doesn’t lead to better results. Better: Milestones usually have a positive effect.

Is this vision too huge and long term?

How sure are you? Would you follow the idea when there would be a way?
Is This Vision Too Huge and Long Term?

The bigger picture

Do you believe your vision is too huge and long term? Stay with it, because when we take action in the right direction we truly experience life.

Overview

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” said Alice.
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where—” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.

Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Do you have a dream?

You believe what you have to offer – your vision – it’s good for the world, but you fear it is too huge and not possible to achieve shortly? How sure are you? Would you invest and develop the idea if there were a clear path to success?

Personal development

Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it,
and I shall move the world.

Archimedes

Have courage. The truth is life is not always simple and easy. Maybe there is a reason for this. We are given difficulties in life to make us stronger. As our challenges increase, we grow stronger to face them.

Once we have begun the steps to improve our lives, we can help others to overcome their barriers and take action. Humans often resist moving or making relevant changes because of the fear of the unknown. How about a coach to join you on your journey?

You need a vision and here is how with step-by-step guide incl. vision board

You need a vision and here is how with step-by-step guide incl. vision board

Do you have a clear vision for your life?
You Need A Vision

Vision

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to craft a compelling personal vision. There are a few essential steps if you want to design a powerful vision. And how about a vision board?

So what is your vision?

The older we get, the faster time seems to pass. Before we know it, the ambitions, hopes, and dreams of our youth become absorbed and forgotten in the background of life. Forgotten dreams … until one day we reflect and wonder if we should have done things differently. Questions pop up like: Did I choose the right path? Is it too late to be what I wanted to be?

Is it too late?

Creating a vision for your life might seem like a frivolous, fantastical waste of time, but it’s not: creating a compelling vision of the life you want is one of the most effective strategies for achieving the life of your dreams. Perhaps the best way to look at the concept of a life vision is a compass to help guide you to take the best actions and make the right choices that help propel you toward your best life.

I want to encourage you that, no matter how old you are or what you’ve been through, follow your destiny and purpose that will satisfy you. What is life without fulfillment?

So what is your vision?
If you don’t have a vision, it’s time for you to get one!

How to create your vision

A vision doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be just about anything.

Don’t expect a clear and well-defined vision overnight – envisioning your life and determining the course you will follow requires time and reflection. You need to cultivate vision and perspective, and you also need to apply logic and planning for the practical application of your vision. The best vision blossoms from your dreams, hopes, and aspirations. If it is right for you, it will resonate with your values and ideals and will generate energy and enthusiasm to help strengthen your commitment to exploring the possibilities of your life.

A vision is like any journey – you need to begin with the end in mind. When you’ve created your vision, imagine what it will feel like when you achieve it. What does that result mean to you and others? Describe the scenario in detail. Allow yourself to dream and imagine, and create a vivid picture, a scenario. If you can’t visualize a picture, focus on how your best life would feel.

The journey

Many people have trouble seeing the potential of their dreams; they give up on them because they don’t see how they will ever come true. Yes, there is a difference between a dream, a vision, and goals. To make your vision comes true, you have to do something. Otherwise, they are only dreams.

Vision goes hand in hand with committed action. Visions are always based on giving and creating, not on getting and having. The journey toward our plans, goals, and visions is just as important as the destination itself. The journey is what builds our patience, faith, endurance, and self-discipline – our personality.

Sometimes we can’t see the wood for the trees, but you are equipped with gifts and talents to achieve our visions. The dreams that you have are there for a reason: to be realized as a part of fulfilling your life purpose.

As your journey begins, make decisions that are in alignment with your vision. This may not always be easy, you may become abundantly aware of how things are in contrast to the vision you’ve created.

Choose and improve your strategy, wisely. Vision and strategy are both important. But there is a priority to them. Vision always comes first. Always! If you have a clear vision, you will eventually attract the right strategy. If you don’t have a clear vision, no strategy will save you.

Step by step

Goals quantify and define the steps you must take. They are the signposts that let you know you are moving in the right direction. I recommend using a special format for your goals; the SMART-Format for well-formed goals. It helps you ensure that the goal you are setting is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

State the goal in the positive

Describe the present situation and compare it with the desired future goal.

  • Where are you now?
  • Where do you want to be?
  • What do you want?
  • State your goals in the positive and describe what you want to achieve instead of what you want to avoid.
  • What are you going toward?

Use sensory-based evidence to define your goal

  • What will you see, hear, feel, etc., when you have it?
  • What steps or stages are involved in reaching this goal?
  • Engage all of your senses in this description process to employ more of your brain and nervous system.
  • Breaking down your goal into manageable steps makes it easier.
  • What are the sizes of the behavioral chunks? Could the size possibly overwhelm you?

Specify the goal in a compelling way

  • Is the goal compelling?
  • Does it pull on you?
  • Make it a compelling future representation that’s dissociated.

Double-check

Make sure that your goal works for you in all areas of your life.

  • Is the desired goal right for you in all circumstances of your life?
  • Is your goal appropriate in all your relationships?
  • What will reaching your goal gives you that you do not now have?
  • What will reaching your goal cause you to lose?
  • Is your goal achievable?
  • Does it respect your health, relationships and other relevant areas of your life?
  • Pay attention to how your whole self responds to the question in terms of images, sounds, words, and sensations within you.

Self-initiated and maintained

  • Is the goal something that you can initiate yourself and maintain?
  • Test your goal by asking if it is something that you have within your power or ability to do.
  • Is it within your control?
Your goal must be something that you can initiate and maintain. It must not be something dependent on other people. Make sure that your goal reflects things that you can directly affect.
  • Is it self-initiated and maintained?

State the context of the goal

  • Where, when, how, with whom, etc. will you get this goal?
  • Is your goal appropriately contextualized?
  • Test your goal by applying it to relevant contexts.
  • Readjust your goal until it fits.

State the resources you need

  • What resources will you need to reach this goal?
  • Who will you have to become?
  • Who else has achieved this goal?
  • Have you ever had or done this before?
  • What prevents you from moving toward it and attaining it now?

Evidence procedure

  • How will you know that your goal has been realized?
  • What will let you know that you have attained that desired state?

How about a vision board?

A vision board is typically a poster board on which you paste or collage images that you’ve torn out from various magazines.

A vision board intends to program your subconscious mind. When you surround yourself with images of who you want to become, what you want to gain, where and how you want to live, or where you want to go on vacation, your subconscious mind wants to match those images and those desires.

How to make a vision board in 5 steps

Step 1

Organize a big stack of different magazines, poster board, and glue.

Step 2

Let yourself have fun looking through magazines and pulling out pictures or words or headlines that you like.

Step 3

Examine the images and begin to lay your favorites on the board. Put away any images that no longer feel right. While you lay the pictures on the board, you’ll get a sense of how the board should be laid out. Find your way, how to organize your vision board.

Step 4

Glue the images onto the board.

Step 5

Choose a place for your vision board where you will see it often.

Decision-making: Do it now! Here are 9 tips for better decision making.

Decision making: Do it now! Here are 9 tips for better decision making.

What might help? Tips for better decision making
Do It Now!

Better decision-making

Making decisions can be difficult. Your success depends on your ability to develop speed as a habit in both; decision-making and executing decisions. Here are a few tips for better decision-making.

Overview

A good plan violently executed right now is far better than a perfect plan executed next week.

George S. Patton

Speed

When you think about it, all business activity comes down to two simple things: Making decisions and executing decisions. Your success depends on your ability to develop speed as a habit in both. I believe that speed, like exercise and eating healthy, can be habitual.

Different requirements

I don’t say all decisions should be made quickly. Some decisions are more complicated or critical than others. It might be helpful for you sometimes to wait for more information. Some decisions can’t be easily reversed or would be too damaging if you choose poorly. Most importantly, some decisions don’t need to be made immediately.

Decision making is one of the most important ingredients of success, yet we are not taught this crucial life skill. With small decisions, a mistake is not serious. However, with a major life, career or business decision, the wrong choice can be devastating. A bad decision can cost dearly in terms of money, time or lost opportunity.

What holds us back?

We want to make the perfect decision that means we don’t lose out on any front. Truth is the life is not usually like that, and we often have to choose between competing values.

Sometimes we give some decisions much more important than they have. Often it doesn’t matter that much.

We want to have a cast-iron guarantee that it will all work out for the best. Unfortunately, life is fundamentally uncertain, and we can never be sure it will.

What might help? 9 Tips for better decision-making

1. Know the mechanisms

Understanding that the problem is the human condition, so we can never have everything we want or know in advance how things will work out.

2. Good is good

Aiming for good enough rather than perfect.

3. Know your values

Find out what values are at stake.

4. Explore the scenarios

Work out the likely consequences of each option.

5. How about your gut feeling?

Ask yourself what gut feelings are around and whether they are telling us something important or misleading us.

6. Have a plan

Have a plan. If we conclude what we should do, but are still leaning in the opposite direction to some extent, how can we help ourselves to stick to our decision?

7. Priorities

Don’t spend too much time on unimportant decisions. Luckily, most of the decisions we make are not irrevocable nor life-threatening. We can change our minds if it turns out that we were wrong.

8. Stay with your decision

It is usually better not to revisit a decision unless circumstances change. Once you’ve gathered the information you need, weigh the pros and cons and conclude. The more you ruminate, the greater the chance that you will second guess yourself.

Once a decision is irreversible, you better not dwell too much on whether it was the right thing to do or not. We will never know everything and can’t do anything about it now, so the time spent on this kind of postmortem would probably be better spent doing something else.

9. Get help

Discuss your decision-making with others to make up your mind. Professional help will support you in the best way.

Decision-making coaching

Decision coaching is a specialized type of coaching. A professional coach with experience in that field combines the skills and techniques obtained from coaching individuals and organizations together with a knowledge and understanding of decision-making principles, decision tools, and best practices. As a result, a decision coach can successfully guide clients through an important or difficult life, career, and business decisions.

I help clients become clear about their values and how they impact the decision. With coaching, I help my client set the criteria for a successful decision and develop and evaluate options. Together we organize the decision process into specific steps and I help my client work through each step avoiding common decision traps. I offer specific decision-making tools and resources to help my client analyze the issues involved, assess risk, evaluate available options and make a wise decision.

As a coach, I have to understand you, your values, long-term goals, wants, and needs. I have to see you as a real person and, at the same time, see you more objectively than you see yourself. I will help you to understand what you want out of your life. I will not decide for you. I act as a skilled guide, consultant, and adviser to help you arrive at your decision, but ultimately the decision should be and needs to be made by you.

Coaching for decisions

Decisions have to be made over and over again - small and large. Some are easy, some are difficult. We make many of these decisions without having to think much about them or even completely unconsciously, automatically. But now and then we come to the point where we encounter a decision where we pause, don't know what to do, don't see clearly. Often these are decisions of great importance that also have the ability to question important aspects of life that were previously considered given or untouchable. Such a situation can create pressure and even lead to paralysis, so that creative and constructive ways remain unconsidered.

Who sees clearly, can decide better and act purposefully. In order for this to succeed, it is necessary to ensure that the options are identified and, if necessary, increased and priorities clarified. Decision coaching helps to oversee the forest for the trees and to find the right focus. The best decision and creativity techniques can be used most effectively in a good mental state.

In order to make your decision easier, to be supported by me, I focus on transparency. On these pages you will find information about me (Karsten Noack) and the fees.
