Executive Sparring in Berlin and Online
For managing directors, business owners, C-level executives, and senior leaders
Executive Sparring in Berlin and Online
An experienced independent perspective for consequential decisions, leadership challenges, and complex professional situations.
For managing directors, business owners, C-level executives, and senior leaders.
In person in Berlin and online.
At senior level, the challenge is often no longer a lack of knowledge.
You may already have extensive experience.
You may have access to specialists, advisers, colleagues, and data.
And still, some situations remain difficult.
Several options may be reasonable.
Different interests compete.
The consequences matter.
Time is limited.
And ultimately, responsibility for the decision remains with you.
This is where Executive Sparring can be particularly valuable.
You bring the situation. We examine what matters, challenge assumptions, test options, and prepare your next move.

What Is Executive Sparring?
Executive Sparring is a confidential one-to-one setting for thinking through demanding professional situations with an experienced independent counterpart.
It is neither advice from someone who wants to take the decision away from you nor coaching that avoids offering a perspective.
It is a serious exchange between two people who engage with the situation from different positions.
I listen.
I ask questions.
I challenge assumptions.
I point out contradictions.
I may take the perspective of another stakeholder.
I test your argument before somebody else does.
And when a clear opinion is useful, I give you one.
The purpose is to improve the quality of your thinking and expand your range of deliberate options.
Your decisions remain yours.
So does the responsibility that comes with them.
Who Is Executive Sparring For?
Executive Sparring is designed primarily for:
- managing directors
- business owners
- CEOs and other C-level executives
- senior leaders with substantial responsibility
- partners and shareholders
- executives moving into a significantly larger role
The title alone is less important than the situation.
What matters is the combination of your role, your responsibility, the potential consequences, and what is at stake.
Executive Sparring becomes particularly valuable when a decision, relationship, negotiation, or leadership situation can have significant organizational, financial, reputational, or strategic consequences.
When Executive Sparring Can Be Valuable
Typical situations include:
- consequential business decisions
- strategic questions
- conflicts within senior management
- conflicts between business partners or shareholders
- difficult stakeholder relationships
- important negotiations
- organizational change
- leadership under significant pressure
- taking over a managing director or C-level role
- professional transitions at senior level
- executive presence
- communication with boards and shareholders
- situations involving highly difficult personalities
Sometimes the issue is primarily strategic.
Sometimes it is interpersonal.
Often both are connected.
And sometimes the question you first bring turns out to be different from the question that actually deserves attention.
That is part of the value of sparring.
Executive Decisions
Important decisions rarely arrive with complete information and certainty.
Several options may appear defensible.
Different interests may point in different directions.
Short-term and long-term consequences may conflict.
And your own experience can sometimes make familiar solutions look more convincing than they deserve.
Executive Sparring gives you space to examine the decision before commitment narrows your options.
Questions may include:
- What do you actually know?
- What are you assuming?
- What remains uncertain?
- Which interests are shaping the situation?
- Which option are you currently favoring?
- What speaks against it?
- Which consequences matter most?
- What is reversible?
- What becomes difficult to reverse?
- Which risk deserves more attention?
- What would you regret overlooking?
- Which decision can you explain and stand behind?
The goal is not artificial certainty.
The goal is a stronger basis for deciding.
Leadership When the Situation Is Complex
Leadership becomes particularly visible when there is no easy answer.
You may need to create orientation while others are uncertain.
Set expectations while relationships are strained.
Choose priorities while several interests compete.
Address a conflict others would prefer to avoid.
Or communicate a decision that some people will dislike.
Executive Sparring gives you space to examine both the situation and your role within it.
Questions may include:
- What does this situation require from you?
- Where is greater clarity needed?
- Which responsibility is genuinely yours?
- Which responsibility belongs elsewhere?
- Which conversation is overdue?
- Where are you giving away influence unnecessarily?
- Where would patience serve you better than immediate action?
- What signal will your behavior send to the organization?
The aim is leadership that is deliberate, credible, and appropriate to the situation.
Conflicts Within the Management Team
Conflict at senior level rarely remains confined to the people directly involved.
When managing directors, partners, or senior executives become locked in conflict, the organization begins to feel the effects.
Decisions slow down.
Messages become inconsistent.
Employees may be drawn into competing camps.
Information begins to move differently.
Trust decreases.
And what began as a disagreement can become a leadership problem for the whole organization.
In Executive Sparring, we can separate the different layers:
- the factual issue
- different interests
- roles and responsibilities
- the relationship
- power and influence
- the communication pattern
- economic and organizational consequences
- your own contribution to the dynamic
- your realistic options
This often makes it easier to decide where dialogue is useful, where greater clarity is required, and where boundaries need to become visible.
Business Partners and Shareholders
Some of the most demanding business situations arise between people who depend on one another.
Founders.
Partners.
Shareholders.
Investors.
Key clients.
A factual disagreement may quickly become connected to status, trust, loyalty, control, influence, or different ideas about the future.
That makes the situation harder to assess from inside it.
We can examine:
- what has actually happened
- which assumptions may be influencing your interpretation
- what each side needs or wants
- where interests genuinely conflict
- where expectations remain unclear
- which agreements matter
- which boundaries need clarification
- which next step is proportionate
Where legal, tax, governance, or other specialist advice is needed, Executive Sparring complements rather than replaces qualified professional advice.
New Executive Roles and Greater Responsibility
A new executive role changes more than your job title.
Expectations change.
Relationships change.
Visibility increases.
Decisions carry more weight.
People interpret your behavior differently.
And approaches that worked well at one level may need to evolve at the next.
Executive Sparring can help you shape that transition deliberately.
For example:
- How do you want to lead?
- What should people experience when working with you?
- Which relationships deserve particular attention?
- Which expectations need clarification early?
- Where do you need greater visibility?
- What should remain part of your leadership style?
- What needs to develop?
- Which decisions belong in your first months?
You do not need to become a different person.
The task is to grow into the responsibility with greater clarity and range.
Executive Presence
Executive presence is often mistaken for appearance, charisma, or a particular leadership style.
I understand it more broadly.
Executive presence is the experience people have of you when responsibility becomes visible.
How clearly do you express a position?
How do you listen?
How do you make decisions?
How do you respond to disagreement?
What happens when pressure increases?
How consistent are your words and actions?
Presence grows from alignment between:
- what you think
- what you say
- how you say it
- how you respond
- how consistently you act
Depending on your situation, we may work on clarity, communication, personal impact, voice, body language, composure, and your response to demanding situations.
The aim is credibility rather than performing an artificial executive persona.
Executive Sparring and Difficult Personalities
Some professional relationships require unusual care.
A stakeholder repeatedly shifts responsibility.
A business partner ignores agreements.
A senior colleague creates pressure through manipulation, ambiguity, or unpredictable behavior.
In these situations, labels are often less useful than observable patterns.
We focus on:
- what the person actually does
- how the pattern affects the business situation
- which responses reinforce the dynamic
- where your influence begins and ends
- which boundaries need to become clearer
- what documentation or preparation may be useful
- which realistic options are available
This keeps the focus on your ability to act rather than on diagnosing another person.
When Communication Becomes Decisive
Sometimes a broader executive challenge quickly leads to one specific communication situation.
A negotiation.
A difficult conversation.
A board meeting.
A shareholder meeting.
A major client presentation.
A keynote.
A media appearance.
Then we can move directly from reflection into preparation.
We may work on:
- your objective
- your key message
- stakeholder interests
- likely reactions
- argumentation
- difficult questions
- language and framing
- conversation strategy
- rehearsal
- voice and body language
- communication under pressure
→ Explore High-Stakes Communication
Executive Sparring or High-Stakes Communication?
The two areas are closely connected.
Executive Sparring
Executive Sparring provides the broader framework.
It is particularly useful for:
- decisions
- leadership challenges
- strategic questions
- conflicts
- complex stakeholder relationships
- professional transitions
- situations in which you need to determine what to do
High-Stakes Communication
High-Stakes Communication focuses more specifically on an important communication situation ahead.
For example:
- a negotiation
- a critical conversation
- a board presentation
- a speech
- a pitch
- a keynote
- a media appearance
One situation can naturally move into the other.
We follow what the situation requires.
Business Coaching or Executive Sparring?
This distinction is important.
Business Coaching
Business Coaching primarily supports professional development.
You may want to improve your leadership communication, strengthen your presentation skills, prepare for difficult conversations, develop confidence, or grow into a more demanding professional role.
The central question is often:
Which capabilities do I want to develop?
Executive Sparring
Executive Sparring begins where the situation itself becomes the central issue.
You already carry substantial responsibility.
The decision, conflict, stakeholder relationship, or communication situation may have significant consequences.
The central question becomes:
How do I think, decide, and act well in this particular situation?
That difference is more important than the job title alone.
How We Work
There is no standard Executive Sparring program to complete.
Your situation determines the work.
A session may involve:
- careful reflection
- strategic thinking
- challenging assumptions
- decision preparation
- scenario work
- stakeholder perspectives
- communication strategy
- role-play
- rehearsal
- candid feedback
- concrete next steps
Sometimes one session creates the clarity you need.
Sometimes a developing situation benefits from several sessions.
And some executives prefer ongoing access to an independent sparring partner who already understands their context.
The method follows the objective.
Business Experience, Psychological Insight, and Communication Expertise
Complex executive situations rarely fit neatly into one discipline.
A negotiation involves more than argumentation.
A conflict between business partners involves more than business facts.
A major decision involves more than analysis.
A board presentation involves more than slides.
My professional background combines several perspectives.
I studied engineering and worked in management, business consulting, and marketing.
For more than 25 years, my work has also focused on coaching, communication, psychology, presentations, and human behavior.
This allows us to look at the actual situation from different angles rather than forcing it into one method.
You can expect:
- careful listening
- analytical thinking
- candid feedback
- constructive challenge
- psychological insight
- communication expertise
- practical preparation
- discretion
You bring your experience, your context, and your responsibility.
I bring an independent perspective and a willingness to engage seriously with the situation.
Confidentiality
Executive Sparring depends on openness.
That makes confidentiality essential.
You may need to discuss information you cannot easily share elsewhere.
Concerns about colleagues.
A possible decision before it becomes public.
A difficult shareholder relationship.
Doubts about your own preferred strategy.
Or issues that would be politically sensitive inside the organization.
Our work provides a confidential setting for that reflection.
An Independent Perspective Matters
The higher your responsibility, the more complicated feedback can become.
People around you may depend on your decisions.
They may have their own interests.
They may want to protect the relationship.
They may tell you what they believe you want to hear.
Or they may simply see the situation from inside the same system.
An external sparring partner has a different role.
I do not need a particular internal outcome.
That creates room for questions, disagreement, and perspectives that may be harder to access inside the organization.
What Executive Sparring Is Not
Executive Sparring is not a substitute for legal, tax, financial, medical, or other regulated professional advice.
It is also not an arrangement in which someone else makes difficult decisions for you.
I can challenge your thinking.
I can offer perspectives.
I can help you prepare.
I can tell you when I see a contradiction or risk.
And I can give you my assessment when that is useful.
The responsibility for your executive decisions remains with you.
Your First Executive Sparring Session
The first session is already a working session.
We begin directly with the situation you want to address.
At the start, we clarify:
- What is happening?
- What would you like to achieve?
- Who is involved?
- What is your role?
- What is at stake?
- Which decision, conversation, or action lies ahead?
Then we work directly with the issue.
This allows you to experience my way of working while already making progress.
For a clearly focused question, one session may be enough.
More complex situations may benefit from additional time or continuity.
In Person in Berlin and Online
Executive Sparring in Berlin
Sessions are available in person at my office in Berlin.
In-person work can be particularly valuable for intensive sparring, sensitive conversations, role-play, presentation preparation, and situations where physical presence deserves attention.
Executive Sparring Online
Online sessions work particularly well for decisions, leadership situations, conflicts, negotiations, stakeholder preparation, and ongoing Executive Sparring.
They also allow focused sessions to fit efficiently into demanding schedules.
By Phone
Phone sessions are available when a focused conversation is the most useful format.
Ongoing Executive Sparring
Some situations benefit from continuity.
You may be moving through organizational change.
Taking over a major leadership role.
Managing an evolving business conflict.
Or facing a series of consequential decisions over time.
In these cases, ongoing Executive Sparring can provide a consistent independent perspective.
The advantage is context.
We do not need to reconstruct your role, stakeholders, and situation from the beginning every time.
We can prepare upcoming situations, review what happened, and adjust your approach as circumstances develop.

SIGNATURE 12 is my ongoing twelve-month Executive Sparring format.
It is designed for executives and business owners who want continuity and reserved access across different consequential situations.

The topics change.
The context carries forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Executive Sparring the same as Executive Coaching?
There can be overlap.
My use of the term Executive Sparring emphasizes the active role of the counterpart.
I ask questions, challenge assumptions, offer perspectives, provide candid feedback, and contribute my own assessment when useful.
The purpose is a serious exchange rather than adherence to a rigid coaching method.
Do I need to be a CEO?
No.
Executive Sparring is primarily intended for people with substantial responsibility.
That includes managing directors, business owners, C-level leaders, partners, and senior executives.
The nature and consequences of the situation matter as much as the formal title.
Can we work on one specific decision?
Yes.
A focused decision, conflict, negotiation, or leadership question can be the entire purpose of a session.
Can we work on an ongoing management conflict?
Yes.
Executive Sparring can help you understand the dynamics, clarify your own position, examine your options, and prepare conversations or decisions.
Do you work with both sides of a conflict?
My Executive Sparring work is generally one-to-one and focused on the client’s role, options, communication, and responsibility.
If a different format would be more appropriate, that should be clarified separately.
Can my company commission Executive Sparring?
Yes.
The company may commission and pay for the work.
The content of the sparring relationship remains confidential unless another arrangement has been explicitly agreed.
Do you work in English and German?
Yes.
Executive Sparring is available in English and German.
