Practical Recommendations for Body Language During a Job Interview

What your body conveys can tell far more about your feelings than you suspect.
How you stand, your eye contact or lack thereof, and the position of your hands, among other things send a message.
Your body’s language establishes a tone that you subconsciously convey.
Most of the time, you probably are not aware that you are giving off these signals.
They are quite automatic because they are subconscious.
Often you
have no idea that you are conveying what you are thinking in your body language.
You can exhibit some control over negative body language with improved self-awareness and practice.

Good communication is particularly important; during a job interview.
Like in many situations,
effective body language is so essential to coming across authentically.
We can learn quite a bit about people by their non-verbal actions.
This is one of the ways that an interviewer is trying to size you up as a candidate.
But the pressure and the short time frame to establish rapport doesn't make it that easy for the candidate.
And for the interviewer it is exactly this information which equips him or her to choose the right candidate.
When we are in stressful or uncomfortable situations, many of us have habits that can be distracting to other people.
Certainly biting one's nails or constantly fidgeting with one's hands could be distracting from what you are trying to say.
These are examples of body language that can be harmful in an interviewing situation.
Used correctly, however, body language can reinforce what you are saying and give greater impact to your statements.

Here are some negative gestures to think about and avoid:

    Up!

  Closed body positions

Never cross your arms in front of you because this is seen as a signal that you are resistant to ideas and not open to others’ opinions.
When speaking with people keep hands at your sides or allow a supporting gesture.

    Up!

  Checking your watch

There is nothing that screams boredom more than the continuous checking of the time.
Do not look at your watch when speaking with someone.
You want to convey continued interest in what they are saying.
The exchange of information should be an engaging one – not a situation where you appear to be focused on something else.

    Up!

  Avoiding eye contact

Looking down is seen as a sign that you are disinterested or feel inferior. Make sure you maintain eye contact without staring.
This will let the other person subliminally know that you are interested in what they have to say.
If the eyes are the window of the soul, looking at someone when you are talking to them is a strong indicator that you are engaged.
Natural eye contact is good while staring is creepy.

    Up!

Wearing a mask like a false smile

A smile is one of the very best ways to communicate sincerity and a friendly, approachable demeanor.
But, don’t force a smile or smile the entire time.
This will irritate others because it looks odd and raises questions in the mind of the person you are interacting with.
A natural smile will resonate during the interview.
A genuine smile involves the entire face while a forced smile uses only the mouth.
Experiences indicate that people are very good at seeing the differences, even if they can't explain why.

    Up!

  Poor posture

Standing up straight with your shoulders back displays confidence and self-assuredness. Slouching immediately makes you look smaller and is indicative of a lack of self-confidence.
Your posture serves to deliver a clear and positive message about how you should be treated. Leave a lasting positive impression with good posture.

    Up!

  Incongruence

Avoid inappropriate body language and learn how to identify it in others. Make sure you are prepared and feel good about yourself.
A positive attitude about interactions with those you know as well as people you are meeting for the first time makes it easier.

Have you ever experienced that someone has good arguments but you feel the person does not seem to be congruent, that something is not quite right!
For a successful credible appearance congruency is essential.
Congruence is when all verbal and non-verbal behavior supports one single outcome or message.
Congruence is a state when a person’s words and body language match exactly.
If you want to clearly know the person’s state of mind, then observe the gesture clusters and their congruence.

Nonverbal signals have way more influence than verbal statements.
When the two are incongruent, most people rely on the nonverbal message and disregard the verbal content.

Be careful! Your body language is going to betray you.
An uncontrollable incongruence between how you are acting and what you are saying is going to say something you don't want.
Many people accidentally leak signals of incongruity simply because they are not confident in a particular situation, such as making presentations in front of an audience.

Most people are quite intuitive about detecting mixed messages, and especially in business this can be highly counter-productive.
Knowledge about body language helps us recognize if people’s bodies and voices are portraying emotions which are contradictory to what they are saying.

In almost all business situations, people are more likely to succeed when they are being congruent.
Management, customer service and sales are more convincing if they are accompanied by congruent body language and a congruent voice tone.

  Conclusion

If the job is worth it; prepare yourself! Know what you want to say, how you want to respond to questions and know the desired outcome?

By improving your rhetorical skills and your body language with coaching and training, you will feel more confident.
And you will learn to read the gestures of others and accurately match them with their verbal statements.

These skills help you to present yourself and your offer more successfully. And they are invaluable in many situations like conversations, negotiations, sales and in a job interview.
