Is Your Presentation More of a Speech or a Conversation?

Your speech or presentation has started and you are embarking on what is called "public speaking". And for some of us it has a negative and frightening meaning.
Because of our conditioning, it has the wrong connotations.
Someone who sets out to give a public speech is going to deliver the material come what may, regardless of the audience’s reaction or feelings. He or she is going to unload the speech to the audience. Even though most audiences have learnt to bear this kind of one-way-communication - all  the monologues - this is not recommendable.

If you are interested in making a difference it may be easier for you to think of your presentation as a "public conversation" rather than a "public speech".
We are familiar with conversations as a two-way process and this  is what public speaking also should be. The speaker is speaking out loud  and the audience responds to it internally, mentally and gives continuous feedback through body language.

Intensifying the effect of your speech isn't rocket science when you are willing to respect your audience. A good speech engages the audience - thus bringing the speech alive.

Remember; even when your audience doesn't respond out loud to your presentation's content, it still comments on what's said and answers the questions internally!  so make it an interesting conversation.

Voice and Personality

There are voices that, like it or not, stick with you for a lifetime. Some voices are soothing and pleasant to the ear, while others are brassy, rough, or even very irritating like the sound of nails scratching across a blackboard.

What many people underestimate is that each individual voice is a powerful natural instrument that represents thoughts and emotions.
So if your voice does not match your professional image, it may very well be hindering your success.

Your voice is the essential tool used to transport your messages in conversations, presentations or interviews. Over the phone or the radio, where there are no other visual clues to accompany your message, it's your voice that actually projects your image.

The sound of your voice, in addition to how you use it to shape your words provides clues about your characteristics: shy, nervous, arrogant, sophisticated, intelligent, energetic, sluggish, professional, or polished.
For that reason, aligning your voice and speaking style to either accentuate or camouflage the personality and physical characteristics you wish to convey is essential to building your overall business image.

Forget Multitasking!
Do One Thing at a Time

Nowadays juggling tasks has gained a strong foothold in how we work and live. Despite the advantages of working on one thing at time, we all tend to multitask today, perhaps even more than we care to admit.

At home, some surf the internet whilst watching television, some eat while they read and some talk on the phone whilst simultaneously checking their emails.

Usually, there is no real harm in multitasking. As long as you are not driving a car and speaking on a cell phone or operating heavy power equipment, you are probably okay. But does it make sense?

So what happens when you jump between different tasks?
Yes, you may feel dynamic, but after all, you’re exerting lots of energy. There’s a loss of productivity.
If you read at the kitchen table while you eat, you don’t taste and enjoy your food to the same extent that you could and you don’t absorb your reading material at your usual retention rate. At work you will make more errors if you don't concentrate solely on the task at hand.

In reality carrying out multiple tasks at the same time seldom saves time nor provides any benefits.

The most efficient way, however, to cope with a number of different projects is to begin working on one thing until its completion, then go on to the next project, then the next, until you are finished. From the standpoint of effectively initiating a task, multitasking is not a great idea nor even a sensible one. You want to give your full and undivided attention to the task at hand. That way you have the best chance of doing a good job, staying focused, and finishing it on time.

Quantity isn't the same as quality!

How to Avoid the Worst Presentation Habits

As an international coach and trainer I work with business professionals who want to engage their listeners. Whether they are addressing employees, customers or colleagues; whether they are speaking directly to someone else or a stadium full of people, excellent presentations have a lot of things in common.

During my years of experience I have identified bad presentation habits that impose barriers between speakers and their listeners. Here are the worst habits and how to overcome them.

The worst presentation habits and how to avoid them:

  • Reading from notes

  • Avoiding eye contact

  • Failure to rehearse

  • Reciting bullet points

  • Failing to excite

  • Standing to attention

  • Dressing improperly

  • Annoying gestures

  • Speaking too long

  • Wearing a mask or acting like an actor

  • No call for attention at the close of a speech

How to Be a Good Listener

Let's quote Winston Churchill:
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak.
Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Listening is a mayor skill we can cultivate. This skill helps us to connect better with others and build stronger relationships. Where would we be and who would we be without those people.

Learning to listen is as important to a career or business as learning to speak well. Communication isn’t complete without both functions. We learn more by listening than we ever do by talking, so it is particular crucial to listen well.

Here are some tips for good listening skills ...

  Self Marketing for Freelancers

I have heard it so many times; “I know my job inside out! Why should I care about self-marketing? I need to concentrate fully on my work!”.
This is a statement commonly heard from freelancers.
And – for sure; quality is essential.
But what is the reality in today’s business environment?
Is quality enough to succeed?

And how do other people even know about the quality of your work?
So many people are competing for the spotlight.
The marketplace is crowded and bustling with action.

If this is the case in your field of expertise; you need to establish a well-known name and reputation if you hope to get ahead.

How to Catch a Liar

Even the most experienced person who is trained to mask their expressions may still betray themselves with their bodies. There are nonverbal cues from the subconscious, which we are not able to conscious control. And there are other signs we give by accident because we don't realize that we are telling more than we intend to. That is why you want to watch for signs of deception.

Authenticity is Essential for Your Branding

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Oscar Wilde

Why is it so important to be real? The above quote of Oscar Wilde gives us a good answer. A replica isn't that successful like the genuine.

To be a brand means to be authentic.

And to be authentic includes maintaining open communication and assuming accountability for your actions. Dishonesty will attract more attention than honesty, and the truth always comes out eventually.
Thus, it is good to pay attention to what is truthful and amazing about you and work hard to make the most of it.

Make Sure You have at Least Three Options

Sometimes we see no freedom of choice. If we believe we have no choice we tend to feel under compulsion. I have to do this. I have no real choice.
This feeling is a signal that we’re backed into a corner with only one option and that more choices are needed.

"How" Instead of "Why"

"Why?" is most of the time a pretty useless question. In my experience the answer tends to be "because...". Than we focus more on the problem and the excuses, less to the solution.

Values as the Driving Force for the Decision Making

Life is filled with choices. Where you go, what you do, and who you become are the result of daily decisions you make.

Values are what we care about. As such, values should be the driving force for our decision making. They should be the basis for the time and effort we spend thinking about decisions. But this is not the way it is. It is not even close to the way it is.

Instead, decision making usually focuses on the choice among alternatives.
Indeed, it is common to characterize a decision problem by the alternatives available. It seems as if the alternatives present themselves and the decision problem begins when at least two alternatives have appeared.

I think this represents almost all decision situations and it should be possible to do much better.

Present Yourself

Do you feel that your strengths come across in your everyday interactions? Every talk, meeting, phone call, email, and resume or portfolio sends a message of who you are and what you are about.

Presenting yourself professionally requires a communications strategy and the skills to do it!

Be Notable!

Identify the components that differentiate you. How do you stand out amidst the other options? What is so special about you and your offer that will benefit others? Incorporate the elements that make you unique in your story. Whether it is your introduction or a sales pitch, make yourself memorable.

Identify your relevant strengths

Concentrate especially on the ones that come from labor-intensive and substantiated experiences because these are the most credible. So many specialists will pitch a project and fail to even mention their years of apprenticeship with another well-known expert. Put your strengths out there, and share the story behind them.

Identify, get to know and involve your target group

Understand the characteristics of your target group. This will make it easier for you to select the most appropriate method for achieving your objectives. And you will present your offer in the language of the audience.

Know the concerns of your audience

Do a candid assessment of the risks someone might find in working with you. Then identify the strengths and differentiating characteristics that best minimize the risk.
For instance; if you’re new on the scene someone could see the risk that you are not professional enough. In that case you’ll want to highlight the past projects you’ve been involved with that demonstrate your dependability.

Remember; nobody will represent you better than you. Take your aspirations into your own hands - as you are the only one that truly cares.

Charisma and Being Present are Key Ingredients to Present Yourself & Your Offer Successfully

What is charisma? - In the literature you'll find definitions like:

  • A special quality of leadership that captures the popular imagination and inspires allegiance and devotion.

  • A gift of God's grace.

  • A personal attractiveness that enables you to influence others.

  • A special charm or allure that inspires fascination or devotion.

What does it really look like for you? And, is it possible for normal people with jobs, families, hobbies, and multiple internal and external commitments to have charisma?
Let's say charisma is the personal appeal, the personal magnetism, a personal attractiveness that enables to influence others.
In that case the answer is, of course, a resounding yes!

Lost in Translation?

The larger part of these web-pages (www.karstennoack.de) are still in German but I am working on the translation because Over the years I have more and more clients speaking other languages than German and I really enjoy that. Let me tell you that I am neither an English teacher nor a native English speaker. I use English the way I do and it has proved to work many times.

Anyway; any hints to improve these page are welcome.

This Is Your Brain on Music: Understanding a Human Obsession von Daniel J. Levitin This is your Brain on Music:
Understanding a Human Obsession

by Daniel J. Levitin

This is a great book. Daniel J. Levitin writes about what is music and how the human brain incorporates it.

I highly recommend this book for those curious about why music is important to us as individuals as well as our society and how biology has allowed this to be so, though if you have no background or knowledge of biology and/or music it may be difficult to follow sometimes.

Procrastination

You would be surprised how many people around the world can lay claim to being a procrastinator – after all, don’t millions of people put off doing something to later on.
While it is normal for people to procrastinate to some degree, it becomes a problem when it impedes normal functioning.

So what is it that you should be doing right now? Maybe writing your thesis or business plan? Doing some work on the computer, cleaning up? More often than not, we tend to occupy ourselves with other things than what we should really be doing. We procrastinate.
But why not just do it?
Why do we procrastinate and how can we change this?

I love to visit improvisational theatre when I am in the United States. Especially in the Big Apple there are a lot interesting events waiting to be explored. A few places in New York City are specialized in improvisational theatre and comedy. And among a lot average presentations, there are really some precious pearls to be discovered.

What has improvisational theatre to do with what I am specialized in?

First; that's what I do because I believe it is good for my mind.
Second; one day in 2004 when I enjoyed improvisational theatre in New York City I had the idea for ImproRhetorics™. As a new way to support my clients, ImproRhetorics™ is now the optimal training for effective spontaneous presentations and communication in general. I improved it again and again and now the feedback from these first trainings underline how outstanding ImproRhetorics™ is.

Christmas and the Brain

Christmas: Even though this period of the year is as often described as contemplative, many people experience it differently.
For many people this period is first and foremost a challenge; a competition with the time that is available - planning the holidays, buying all the presents, all the decisions, the where, when and what to do first.
There is so much that has to be taken care of!
Hurry and stress dominate this time from the perspective of many people.

How about alternatives?
