Be Prepared for Your Important Conversations |
Paul Watzlawick once said, "You can't not communicate". Good communication skills are part of the most important abilities in private life as well as in business. We communicate with so many people in so many ways, even when we are not aware of it. Interpersonal communication takes place at many levels. The exchange of verbal and nonverbal information offers a large variety of possible misunderstandings. Without communication skills we are unable to let others know what we think, feel, or want to accomplish. We are unable to build partnerships, motivate others, or resolve conflict. The influence of my own communication with others on my own mental abilities is also interesting. The meaning of language and the words we use are the elements we structure our thoughts and therefore our lives. |

Good communication skills are absolutely vital in any successful workplace. The ability to impart information and instructions clearly and concisely and so that they are easily understood can determine whether or not you get your message across to a customer or colleague, or clinch that deal. It is your choice; besides the concrete preparation of important conversations you have the possibility to improve your conversation and communication competence generally. If you want to be more successful, the better you are able to communicate, the more you will achieve. But it is also often said – wrongly – that a good communicator is someone who speaks well. The smallest part of any personal communication that makes an impression is of the verbal kind. There is obviously much more to communication excellence than just being able to talk well. Communication is the transfer of information from one mind to another mind, or to a group of other minds. It can be in the form of an idea, a fact, an image, an emotion, or a story. It can be written, spoken, painted, danced, sung, or mimed. Whatever the medium, if the message doesn’t reach the other person, there’s no effective communication.
The goal of
communication is to implant in my mind what’s in your mind. And that is
done best when you talk to me. The burden of the effort is on the
communicator. Don’t ever forget that. Moving your mouth and saying words
in a common language won’t be enough. The one who appears to be
reasonable, sensible, and who tries to be reassuring, usually wins. |
