What is charisma?

In the literature you'll find definitions like:

• A special quality of leadership that captures the popular imagination and inspires allegiance and devotion.

• A gift of God's grace.

• A personal attractiveness that enables you to influence others.

• A special charm or allure that inspires fascination or devotion.

What does it really look like for you? And, is it possible for normal people with jobs, families, hobbies, and multiple internal and external commitments to have charisma?
Let's say charisma is the personal appeal, the personal magnetism, a personal attractiveness that enables to influence others.
In that case the answer is, of course, a resounding yes!

Absolute presence is the key component to presenting yourself and your offer successfully to your audience.

A good starting point is to be present - since any orientation towards either the past or future takes the focus away from the present moment.

Although specifying your goal & knowing where you want to go is very important - in the overall picture being firmly in the present is necessary to getting there (reaching your destination).

For instance do you spent too much time concentrating on the past? Many people do. Or do you, for instance, go perhaps to a yoga class and spent a lot of that time working on the to-do list? 

Even from these simple examples it should be clear as to how being present in the moment is an important factor for your performance. And that not being in the present is a counter-productive state.

It's simply a matter of choice to be present in the moment and a few essential elements are helpful to develop, activate or enhance your personal presence. Those are ...

... Be in the moment
This kind of presence that is meant here means more than just being physically present. It also means to be present in mind; mindful, thoughtful, attentive in the here-and-now.

... Know yourself
One reason we are drawn to leaders is that they radiate confidence. That confidence emerges from a sense of self. They know they are up to the job and hunger for it. Better yet, and this is where charisma comes in, they make you feel that they can do it, too. And even better, you can help them do it.

We all want to believe our lives are meaningful and that at the end of our lives, we will have had a positive impact on the world. We seek meaning - physically, emotionally, and spiritually - through our work, our families, and our communities.

Do you know why you are here?

Life purpose is not simply our work lives, nor is it simply our home lives or our roles within our families and communities. It is a combination - a balance, if you will - of all aspects of our lives that creates fulfillment. Life purpose is what gives meaning to our lives. It makes us feel alive, empowered, capable, and strong. Life purpose answers the question “Why am I here?”.

Charismatic people are in touch with their purpose in life. And we feel the intensity.

... Present your thoughts authentically
To stand for something that is important to you means sometimes standing up in front of an audience and delivering. More often you will be speaking in small groups, but regardless of the size of the audience, you must speak with knowledge as well as conviction.
Your voice and communication skills (both verbal and nonverbal incl. your body-language) are your tools of mind that reflect your inner state of mind.

... Be yourself and remain humble
This may sound like the antithesis of charisma, but it is not. People who are grounded when speaking or listening one-on-one are those that inspire most. So often in the tales of great leaders, we hear their followers say, that they made them feel important. That's charisma in reverse; make the other person feel special - because he is. That may be the ultimate gift of charisma, the authentic one-to-one connection with individuals. As desirable as charisma may be, it is valuable if you use it for a good reason. Ultimately, we are all judged on results.
