Body Language in an Job Interview

We communicate different types of information at different levels of understanding.
The communication process consists of more than the spoken or written language.
When we communicate with someone, we sometimes get our message through and sometimes we do not.
Many times it is not because of what we said or the logic of our thoughts, but because many times the reception of our communication is based upon the degree of the listener’s empathy for our nonverbal communication.

Most people do not realize just how much they use their body language every time they communicate with another person.
We use it unconsciously.

There are moments in life when good communication is particularly important; like during a job interview.
Like in many situations,
effective body language is so essential to coming across authentically.
We can learn quite a bit about people by their non-verbal actions.
This is one of the ways that an interviewer is trying to size you up as a candidate.
But the pressure and the short time frame to establish rapport doesn't make it that easy for the candidate.
And for the interviewer it is exactly this information which equips him or her to choose the right candidate.
When we are in stressful or uncomfortable situations, many of us have habits that can be distracting to other people.
Certainly biting one's nails or constantly fidgeting with one's hands could be distracting from what you are trying to say.
These are examples of body language that can be harmful in an interviewing situation.
Used correctly, however, body language can reinforce what you are saying and give greater impact to your statements.

By improving your external body language, you will feel more confident inside.
And with more confidence your body language will be more authentic; it is a cycle!

And as an important side effect you will learn to read the gestures of others and accurately match them with their verbal statement.
You get additional feedback to improve your communication and therefore your relationships with others.
